Film Festival calendar

While I’m usually happy as a pea in pod to share some of my favorite upcoming films every weekend, there comes a time that an entire weekend or evening must be put aside for special screenings.  These festival screenings of films separate those who are merely interested in showcase from the die hard film geeks.  It is for the latter’s sake that I simply must post this notice, lest they miss another film fest.  While each one of these festivals warrants their own blog posts, for now please mark your calendars.

  • 2007 St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase (presented by Cinema St. Louis)
July 21-26, 2007 @ the Tivoli Theater, Centene Center for Arts & Education, and Blueberry Hill (check schedule for show times)

This seventh annual showcase of local films of national quality features a special compilation screening of “This is Lo-Fi Saint Louis”, including a discussion of videography and blogging with Bill Streeter. In fact most films in the showcase will feature a Q&A with their creators, all of whom are supposed to have strong ties to the area and many for whom this screening might be the only one of their works. That alone can justify the $10 ticket price (or $8 for students), which are available ONLY through the Tivoli Theater’s box office in advance, and on a first-come, first-serve basis during the festival (no internet or phone sales).

  • Film Gate Int’l Student Film Festival (via the Webster Film Series, etc)
August 17-19th, 2007 @ the Winifred Moore Auditorium in Webster University

Featuring films from around the world and in our own backyard, this 2nd annual film festival shows the best in student film work available. Word on the street is that our friends @ the Webster Film and Video Society are helping organize the competition but could use some help with the out of town students coming just to screen their films. We’re pretty sure you’re going to want to see these films, and not just because we could have had class with their creators.
  • City Museum Film Contest
August 24th, 2007 (submission deadline is July 21st)

As previously noted by 52nd city, this video contest for the under 18 set is sure to undermine the remaining semblance of professional skills film students like me have earned. That being said set your countdown clocks to the 24th of August, the beginning of the end. And keep your eye on the City Museum’s myspace page, which will feature the winning video as the official film of the City Museum.
  • Idaho Ave Film Festival
    September 8th, 2007 (submissions due July 28, 2007) @ 5229 Idaho Ave

This homegrown film festival features submission charge-free local, amateur, and student shorts selected by its hosts. Now in it’s 3rd year (although I can still remember the first show), this festival continues to garner more professional quality work from amateur filmmakers. One need look no further than the flyers floating around town instead of the home it will be screened in. More on this film festival later. See you there.

Phew! Well now you can’t tell us you didn’t hear about it anymore…so mark your calendars already.  We’ll probably have more to tell you about each one a little closer to each event.
