Every once in awhile I get an e-mail or press release that is too good not to share publicly, even though it has been distributed to the public at large.  In this case I received an press release from my friends at Apop Records that needs to be shared, if only because it’s mostly decipherable only by the audience who would be attracted to these events in the first place.

Tonight, Thursday March 6th 9pm. XRIN ARMS: Soul samples crushed and toyed with like submissive prisoners into deconstructed fits of digital beat fury. Fans of Realicide & digital hardcore where are you?
Backing: Miscellaneous, Etc. & PLEKO.

Friday March 7th. JUSTICE YELDHAM: Madness behind glass. It is not a shield, separating the spectators into safety, but a tentative punisher and siren of suffering wielded by the madman. Don’t look away, you can’t.
Backing: Flower of Flesh and Blood, The Miracle Worker, The Lonely Procession.

Saturday March 8th 2 pm. Free instore from Chicago’s YAKUZA.

They like to call it Apopaganda. And I get the feeling there is going to be lots of art happening on Cherokee Street in the near future, or at least this weekend.

UPDATE: Apop Records has sent a correction, telling us that Yakuza has moved to Sunday March 9th for their free in-store performance.  In the future you can always rely on our Calendar to keep you updated.

Show-me show

So you’ve heard about the Show-me Blowout and…wait, you haven’t?  Alright we’ve put off mentioning one of the most important music festivals of the year, featuring some of the best rock’n’roll in the region.  I kind of thought you’d have heard about it by now.

But that doesn’t mean we’re not excited by it; Gabe and I will be there both nights helping Bill Streeter to document the best garage, punk, and surf rock on video that this state has perfected from its rockabilly and blues roots.  So as this side of the river is known to suggest, we’ll just have to show you.  The shows will take place this Friday and Saturday night October 12-13th around 8pm and onward at Off Broadway.

One part of the blowout you might not be as familiar with is the FREE barbeque at Apop Records on Saturday afternoon between 1-5pm.  That rock’n’roll tailgate of sorts will feature performances from some of St. Louis’ heroes of rock, including The Vultures, The 65s, The Vickroids, and The Mad Titans; it’s also The Place You Want To Be.  We’ll see you there too.

We hadn’t heard from our friends @ Apop records in a little while, so when we found this message in our inbox I just knew I needed to pass it along:

As usual lots more new stuff in the store still waiting to be inventoried, so be sure to stop by to see all the latest additions. Paypal is accepted at orders@apoprecords.com or you can order off of apoprecords.com

Which is good, because we needed an excuse to make a trip down to their store anyway, and picking up an online order for an extra copy of Vienna by Ultravox fits that bill.  Fortunately Apop is still putting on shows (hence making it doubly worth a visit), so here’s a few coming up soon.  And (just this once) I helped them add their next show on Upcoming, for those of you like me who find that useful.

Funky Thursday (Blowfly does STL)

Just because you missed Blowfly’s show last week @ the Atomic Cowboy (even though we gave you advance notice) doesn’t mean you have to miss the debauchery.  As your personal witness to this funky, if misogynistic, icon of free expression himself, here’s my perspective of his recent tour of St. Louis available as a FlickR slide set (for more photos).

At first you’ll see his appearance @ Apop records who threw a party in his honor.  It was there his appetite for the fairer sex became apparent to even those who were not familiar with his music, although he told one young lady I was a “FBT; Female Bootyhole Tickler”.  And despite or perhaps because of his unique manner of expression, he was able to charm the swarming crowd @ the Atomic Cowboy.  Bill Streeter was also on hand at the concert venue to document the performance’s ongoings, so keep your eyes peeled on LoFiSTL.com for further video documentation of this Funky Thursday.

We just got word that the original dirty rapper, Blowfly, is not only on tour for the first time in 35 years but will play at the Atomic Cowboy. The show will be this Thursday, June 28th for a mere $10 a head, but stick around for the weekly Funkbuffet, served as a natural accompaniment. And according to the Apop records culture bureau:

The original Rapp Dirty man himself is gonna be chillin’ over at Apop before the show at Atomic Cowboy this Thursday. He’ll be jammin’ and signin’ and bringin’ hella merch for y’all to pick up. In honor of his presence, we’ll be boozin and par-tayin it up from 6 pm until showtime. You can BYO–WHATEVER, but we’ll also be bringing the liquid funk.

But caution to those of you with innocent ears and loose morals; according to his website Blowfly says, “I am coming to St. Louis to stick my dick in that tight hole you call the arch!”  Don’t say we didn’t warn you…
